Students with Special Statuses

Need intro text for this section...

Campus Change Students

Student dismissal appeals will be reviewed, and recommendations made by committees from the campus which the student attended immediately prior to their becoming subject to dismissal. Dismissal decisions will be made based on the student’s academic performance to date, as well as their likelihood of success at their new campus.

Dual Degree Students

Students who are pursuing degrees in two or more schools or colleges, will be required to submit only one appeal which will be reviewed, and dismissal recommendations made by advisors in each of the colleges in which they are enrolled. If the student is retained, it may be the case that one of their conditions for continuation is that s/he is dropped from one of the degrees.

International Programming in China (ECNU and UNNC)

Fall 2021

Students attending East China Normal University (ECNU) or the University of Nottingham Ningbo (UNNC), who are not in good standing as of May 19, 2021–as a result of Fall 2020 grades and partial Spring 2021 grades–will have a probationary semester in Fall 2021, regardless of status (WARN, PROB, SDSM).

Academic standing will be re-evaluated once all grades are received and processed for the Spring 2021 semester (likely mid-Fall 2021).

Students should contact Experiential Global Learning (EGL, formerly Education Abroad) or International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) with any questions.

Non-Degree Status

Students who leave the University of Connecticut whose status is “warning”, “probation”, “subject to dismissal” or “dismissed” are no longer entitled to the following services or benefits:

  • Financial Aid
  • University Housing
  • Student Recreation Services

However, with permission, students do have the opportunity to continue taking a limited number of classes. Go to the tabs above for rules pertaining to non-degree students, as well as information about taking non-degree courses in preparation for readmission.

Please note that international students cannot remain at the University as non-degree students.

Taking Courses at UConn

Below are the rules for dismissed students who plan to continue taking courses at the University of Connecticut, either in preparation for their return to the University or to transfer to another institution.

  • Coursework taken in the period between dismissal and readmission will be part of the student’s non-degree record.
  • Students must complete a Non-Degree Application. The Non-degree application opens four weeks prior to the beginning of each regular semester.
  • Provided their application is approved, students may then contact a Non-Degree Advisor for permission to take courses. If permission is granted, the advisor will remove the student’s registration hold.
  • With approval and permission, dismissed students may register for a maximum of 8 credits per semester in the Student Administration System.
  • Non-degree registration opens two weeks prior to the beginning of each regular semester.
  • Credits earned during the dismissal period, either at UConn or elsewhere, will be applied to the student’s degree record upon his/her readmission to UConn.
  • Repeat forgiveness rules will apply to non-degree courses once the student is readmitted and the courses are applied to the student’s degree record.
  • Because dismissal decisions are made during the winter and summer, students are often already taking intersession courses when they are dismissed. For information on how summer and/or winter course enrollment affects dismissal decisions and status changes, go to the Summer Winter Page.

Taking Courses Elsewhere

Dismissed students may elect to take courses at an external institution in preparation for their readmission to the University. The following rules apply:

  • For transfer back to the University of Connecticut any coursework taken at an external institution must be accredited by the University.
  • Go to the Transfer Admissions website for rules pertaining to the accreditation process, as well as for information on how courses offered at Connecticut degree-granting institutions will transfer to the University.
  • Upon readmission, courses approved for transfer will be posted to the student’s degree record. Please note that grades do not follow transferred courses, so the student’s University of Connecticut GPA will not be affected by the addition of transfer courses.
  • Students who are considering taking courses at an external institution in preparation for their return to the University of Connecticut are strongly encouraged to meet with a non-degree advisor to discuss their plans for readmission.
